7 Deadly Sins: Comments

Gravatar boutique gas formulas

Thank you! A lot of the refinery issues that add to the temporary shortages that increase prices can be directly related to the different formulations. Especially now with the switch from winter to summer fuel.

The only thing I kind of disagree with as to ethanol is the transportation issue. Which I think they will resolve, but not being able to use a pipeline for ethanol has had a minor contribution and might cause some delays which would increase some temporary shortage issues.

To me another logical solution would be to do away with the majority of these boutique gas formulas, it would increase refinery production since it would no longer be necessary to have to go thru the shut down restarting process that has a direct relation to supply, demand and cost.

Gravatar I'm not so sure about the federal fuel tax. While normally I am viscerally anti-tax, on the other hand, thinking of the gas tax as a user fee for the roads changes things around -- why should poor people who live in the inner city and take public transportation be subsidizing road-building so that rich people can live in their exurbian macmansions and still drive to work in a reasonable amount of time? The advantage of charging for roads at the gas pump is that it is pretty much proportional -- the more you use the roads, the more you pay.

And then there is the question of whether the federal gas tax is a user fee for the military. If the wahabis weren't owners of gazillions of dollars worth of oil, we wouldn't need to spend nearly as much on the army & marines as we do now. Just like we tax the guy at the pump because he's going to use that gas to drive on the roads we build and maintain with those taxes, the guy at the pump is "using" the military to prevent the loony oil ticks from using their oil profits to murder and enslave us.

Gravatar Yes, as I pay almost $3 a gallon while Exxon and Mobil rack up record profits, I find myself quite annoyed with big oil right now. Their stranglehold on the American economy is not going to last forever, and the American public is going to get retribution at some point, and speaking from my perspective, I hope some serious ass-kicking is involved.

Gravatar And, that's coming from a largely pro-business hawkish semi-conservative....not your average idiotic DU f'tard.

Gravatar Lisa Renee,

I agree that boutique gas formulas are part of the problem, but I think a bigger problem is that BigOil has no competitors for fuel dollars.

It would be a good idea to uniform-ize the formulation. Of course, I would submit that all fuel in the US be at least 10% ethanol...

Cathyf,

I am not against a fuel tax in theory, just against politicians that control the fuel tax making noise about the price of gas. The road use fee idea is ok and I would support an even HIGHER tax on gas if the money was not going to the Gov'Ment to spend on stupid programs. Channel that money directly into AltFuels research and you got a winner, funding for the research and a disincentive to use more gas.

Gravatar Not that BigOil would ever let that happen...

About 1000 gallons to turn a profit? That would take me a long time to use, but I live less than a mile from the office.
