I have been under the impression that Microsoft has been taking a bath on its XBox 360 platform for the sake of gaining market share. I believe that the hardware side of the industry will be dominated by Microsoft and Sony. As for the software side, I am not really sure.
I did much research in my purchase of the Xbox and am planning a purchase of their 360. I have sworn off game purchases for my CPU and am currently satisfied with the current selection of games. But I also don't run out and purchase games as they release.

You didn't comment on the millenialist implications of the 144,000 number.
(Think we can make a game for the Left Behind series?)

Fersboo,
Yes, it is true that console hardware is a money losing business. The money is to be made on the software that has to be "approved" and "licensed" in order to be sold. Don't shed a tear for Micro$oft, they are one of the few players in the game industry that is making money (along with Sony and EA).
Sounds to me like you are an informed consumer. Good for you. If you researched the proposed lineup of XBox360 games and they are to your liking, you could do much worse for your money.
It is also a good idea to let the initial rush for new games (and systems!) play out before buying. You will keep more of your hard earned cash in your own pocket.

cathyf,
I once had a boss (in a game company) that was completely convinced that there were aliens and that they were the instruments of God. He once told me that he would put in a good word for me when the "mothership" came because I never laughed at him when he went off on his ravings.
Of course I did laugh at him, just not in front of him...
And, no it's not the one you are thinking of... heh
