I remember finding little scraps of paper in my father's handwriting after he died: it held so much of HIM. The mysterious element that is not there on a computer screen.

My mom too habitually underlines and passes on. Funny to be inside her head while she reads.
It gives me the notion that asking students to submit an underlined textbook page would be a novel assessment of where their comprehnsion is at.
Your starling flock photo! Reminds me: with such an abundance of pigeons, why not more hawks in cities?

Siona,
That is so true- who sends letters anymore. I do. I love writing letters and I love receiving letters. It seems like this is yet another dying art.

Thank you for this encouragement. The more that a book engages &/or challenges me, the more I write and draw in it. Re-reading my books, I can see & remember what other influences were shaping my thoughts at that time, as in a journal.
Very occasionally I have given one of my marked-up books to a student or a friend rather than giving them a new copy, intending to give something of myself that way. Every time, I have ended up getting myself another copy of that book and filling it up again with thoughts and scribbles!

It's fun to see this post... and then to respond after Christy as just last week Christy shared this practice with me and I am now following in her footsteps and writing in my books this week!
