Gravatar what?! where my money at, yo?! (interrocashola!)

Gravatar My center hosted an interfaith breakfast with a local Unitarian church. A brother brought this subject up-- paying for breastfeeding and so on-- and you've never seen the old "why do you wear hijab" question dropped so fast in your life! Every female face lit up : )

Gravatar Asalaamu alaikum.

Yeah, all women will get excited when they hear these are just a few of the many rights Islam granted them.

Find a brother who actually practices any of them though...

Gravatar OMG, you are so funny!

Gravatar LOL! Keep forgetting that little nugget.....that should be what I tell people when they ask why I converted.

Being a woman is very powerful and I think that we don't rejoice in that as much as we should. Being a mother is a bigger power and to raise your child in the best way possible.

Gravatar really? I did not know this. Um. . .where does this come from, you know, so I can show it to my husband. I wonder if I can get back pay for all the breastfeeding I've already done.

Gravatar This is one of the things I hate about Islam. All the misleading ideas, trying to make it seem as though woman have it sooooo good. Now please, tell me how many women do you know that are not cooking, cleaning and have gotten paid for breastfeeding. I bet you couldn't even count them on the fingers of one hand (your right hand of course!)

Same goes for the 'Paradise is at the feet of mothers' idea. Yeah! right!

Gravatar Dawn, it's all in the Qur'an.

Khadija - True, not many take advantage of it, but i do know some who do. I have a friend here too who had her husband pay for breastfeeding. It's not Islam you have a problem with, it's the fact that culture corrupts islam. Islam does afford women these rights - women just don't make it happen.

Gravatar Culture doesn't corrupt Islam. In fact, cultures often enable communities and individuals to engage with Islam in a way which is appropriate to their psychogeography.

I don't see any difference in salafi anti-culturalism and colonial paternalism. If rights and duties are absent within Muslim communities, they should be addressed at the community level, with due respect for that culture.

Everyone has a culture, and as the Qur'an points out, that's a blessing.

Wasalaam

TMA

Gravatar I can think of a million ways culture corrupts Islam... Hindu influences, pagain influences, etc. Culture of course is interesting but what i mean is that when culture is valued above the Qur'an and what the Qur'an says, that is cultural corruption.

Examples: Pakistani higher classes shunning hijab considering it non fashionable, Arabs who feel it's okay to treat Pakistani's/South Asians like dogs, cheats, thieves, and the like scamming their "brothers". I could go on and on about this...

Gravatar This is awesome!!! I just read yesterday that when you get married your husband must pay you a dowry and now I find out I can get get paid to breastfeed when I have children Inshallah! It just gets better and better. LOL

Gravatar Hmm, maybe i should go ahead and have a baby instead of looking for a job!

"Honey... she's hungry again, fork it over!"

Gravatar ROFL, that is one I will have to remember. yes, I converted so I can get paid for breastfeeding. great answer. Think all muslim men should be required to take a class on women's rights in Islam before they get married, just to clarify things. lol
