Gravatar Assalaamu aleikum Renee! Long time no talk... I found your blog a little bit ago and love your crafty projects, ma sha' Allah. (I'm all sewy, knitterly, and crochetly nowadays myself!)

After reading about your problems with LD and school I just had to say been there done that! It really sounds like you have a gifted child (I've got two that we know of so far, and my third son seems to be heading that way). Parents of gifted children have the perpetual challenge of finding peers for their kids. The problem is often that their interests are far above their age level, so they tend to work better with older kids in some ways, but often lack the social skills to fully integrate with older kids. Don't expect your son to be best buds with random kids at school! I remember my oldest getting so frustrated with neighborhood kids when they would randomly play with dinosaurs and he'd constantly correct them about which were from the jurassic period and which were from the cretaceous period and couldn't be together... Even now my kids are on a whole different plane from most kids they encounter and they just don't get each other that well. Luckily my 3 boys are close together and are best friends, and they can deal well enough with others on a superficial level. I've found that homeschooling (we have since the beginning because my oldest was just too into sciency stuff (physics, chemistry) that other KG kids were not, and I feared the teachers squelching his love of advanced topics that were not the norm) groups tend to have lots more mixing of kids of different ages together, so my sons get more exposure to older kids who are more likely to share their interests... and those older kids are homeschooled and hence usually more used to being around younger kids... so it works out better all around. Anyway, not to be writing a novel in your comments, but you need to get on gifted parenting lists if you aren't already so you can network with other parents having the same problems! Tagmax TAGMAX@LISTSERV.ICORS.ORG is a list for parents who homeschool their gifted kids... and there are other G/T lists for parents whose kids are dealing with school.
http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/ Hoagies is also a great starting point for all things gifted.
Hope you guys had a great Eid, in sha' Allah, and email me if you want more "gup shup" on gifted stuff. We have been dealing with our gifted boys for a while now, and LDs issues sound like what started us on the path we are on now!

Gravatar wa alaikum salaam!

I've had someone else tell me he might be too. I always thought those kids had to read and write by a certain age and LD has no interest in that. It will come when it comes i imagine. What you say is so true and does sound like him too. I think he borders on ADHD but it's amazing even though his body is going 110 mph all the time he retains everything going on around him and notices the slightest details. I'll email you...gotta find your email though. THanks for your input. I sometimes feel at such a loss. My kid is so different/unique and so many people don't understand him. He's become aware of it and often only shows himself to us.

Gravatar Definitely send me a mail. My boys weren't early early readers, they were all science stuff all the time like it sounds like LD is. Not all gifted kids are the self taught early readers. You might want to consider giftedness testing which can sometimes give you insight into exactly how asynchronous your child is from others. Extreme attention to detail, amazing memory and recall, ability to learn subjects far above age level norms, those are the sorts of signs that clued us in with the boys. It's like they are obsessively thirsty for knowledge! Al Hamdulillah it's a fun ride as a parent trying to feed these types of needs for new information and stimuli. My kids exhaust resources that I think will keep them busy for a while so much faster than it seems possible. I put my email address in the comment, I couldn't find yours either which is why I'm writing in your comments!

Good luck figuring out the best way forward for both you and LD!

Gravatar You said "Extreme attention to detail, amazing memory and recall, ability to learn subjects far above age level norms, those are the sorts of signs that clued us in with the boys." and this sounds exactly like my little one. I didn't see the email address. I emailed you through yahoo groups so hopefully you get it...

Gravatar LD sounds defenetly like a gifted child! My cousin is gifted child, he was only able to have proper friends on his late teens, before he was really frustrated. He is so clever, also into scientific and computer stuff.Just after his last exam in university he got a call to work in Nice for a big company, he is earning 4 times what I was earning in my last job, he gets house and car payed by the company...and he just left UNI! So at least you know he will probably end up with a great future

Gravatar quite possibly. we'll see. it's hard to tell at this age because each kid has their talents.
