Not only is Ebonics not a foreign language, it's a direct offshoot of po' Southern/Appalachian dialect. When my daddy showed up at school talking "hillbilly", the teachers didn't worry about his self-esteem, they corrected his speech. He still spoke the same, but he learned enough about standard English to become a fluent reader.
What a gip! He should have sued to let them learn in Appalonics. His self-esteem probably never recovered.
