I may be crazy but I love Japan's "soul deadening suburban sprawl". :)
I also love Japanese conbinis, though I'd have to say my favourite is Lawson. You could find one on every second corner in Yonago. *sigh*

When we went to Nara, we had a young Japanese female guide (friend of Kathleen's),who took us to many wonderful sites. I was surprised not to see any of them at your blog.
Nara has five sites listed on the Unesco World Heritage List, including Horyuji Temple and Todai-ji; the latter houses the largest Buddha statue in Japan. There are shinto shrines to visit, as well as numerous lovely parks where deers graze.
Nara was wonderful! It is more than suburban sprawl. That's the thing about Japan...there are gems to be found, everywhere! I suggest a return visit from Kyoto with plans to visit "beautiful" Nara.

Those Bento Box lunches look delish. I could certainly get used eating those on my long cycling days.

I too didn't want the trip to end! I hope to do some cycling in Hokkaido in July.
I went to Nara with some friends several months ago and saw all of the deer and World Heritage Sites and temples and parks. So this time around I took a pass on the sight-seeing. Which is why there are no photos of the pretty parts of Nara.
Yes, the bento boxes were all delicious. The best thing about cycling in Japan is that I get to combine two of my greatest loves -- bikes and Japanese food!

Your pictures of the bento lunches are just killing me. The day I read the one with the pic of the tonkatsu I got an instant craving and almost immediately headed out to the only authentic J-restaurant I know to satisfy it. Unlucky for me, it was closed!! :(

Would it make you feel better if I told you the bentos weren't really that tasty? Honest. They weren't! At least you can get timbits where you are :)

Actually, in Canada and internationally (although countries could opt out based on their marketing and branding I suspect), they did re-brand the YHA "Youth Hostels Association" to "Hostelling International" in recognition that it wasn't just drunk North Americans college graduates traveling in Europe anymore.
This comment courtesy of yet another useless fact roaming around in my head.
