I totally 100% get the feeling behind this post. I felt exactly the same when I first got back to Canada (and sometimes still do). I love those moments where you are stopped in your tracks with the realization: This is what I missed. It's a good feeling. :)
(I'm still jealous you're in Japan and I'm not though. Ha ha.)
There's nothing like living abroad for developing an affection for the homeland, eh? I remember feeling the same way when returning to Vancouver from abroad. I had no idea that the city was so beautiful until I left and came back.
I, too, really dig the way subways smell. Maybe it's got something do with all the ozone in the air because of the electricity?

Living in Australia this year has made me miss so many things about Canada. I guess it hasn't helped that I'm miserable in my job for the first time in my life and I'm just not used to being so miserable. But my time is passing quickly and in a little over 13 weeks I'll be home and my year of weekend travels and adventures will be over. Enjoy the rest of your time in Japan. Canada will always be waiting for you with its arms wide open. We are very very very lucky to be Canadian.
I can't believe you're done in 13 weeks! Try to make the most of it. It will pass quickly. I also feel very lucky to be Canadian and am looking forward to settling down back home one day (just not yet!).
I miss being able to read the cereal box at breakfast too :)
