Wow, I don't think I'll be able to stand that. I like my showers too much...

Sounds like a lovely and "quaint" place to live. Plus, the landlord that likes you? That's a win right there.
Why is the laundry on the rooftop? Just to take advantage of easy air-drying?

hey, i found you by accident^^. seems we're in the same neck of the woods, almost. i live on the other side of the river...your room's nice, btw! i'm not dealing with squat toilets (though i agree, they're not that bad) and shared coin operated showers (that one would be worse for me...), but my tatami's so threadbare the landlord covered it with a carpet. and it'll be interesting to see how these windows deal with a typhoon...
anyway, hope your new place feels like home soon!

I don't mind the coin showers at all. The only thing that I really don't like is having a single-burner stove and no counter space. It makes cooking a chore.
I think the only reason the laundry is on the rooftop is because there was no space to put it anywhere else. It is a little windier up there, though, which makes drying faster!

I had a squatty potty convertor in my apartment. Not sure when you buy them. My supervisor got it for me before I moved in!

I just discovered your site by accident and have enjoyed learning about Japan through your eyes and experiences! I found this new site today with a Japanese Museum of Christian martyrs. I wonder if this is near you. If you can go there. I was rather taken by the stories of the martyrs. I can't imagine suffering like that. Here is the link I found:

Oh, I would get the toilet converter so you can sit proper. Maybe you can order one online?

I kinda like the squat toilet. It feels very Japanesey. But I'm curious about the converter. This is the first I've ever heard of it!
