Smithers MINNEAPOLIS - Old HALOSCAN comments, please discontinue the use of these comments.

Now I’m sure the administration has crunched the numbers and made the phone calls to make sure the 20K troop surge that will be talked about tonight, has the ‘support’ to be carried through. If the support wouldn’t be there, I doubt the prez would even bring it up. The Democrats are doing a good deal of posturing and saber rattling, but even they are waiting for the polling to be run after the announcement tonight (as I’m sure many Republicans are too). If the American audience believes and supports what is said tonight, I’d fully expect the surge to take place in short order. Keep in mind this is the same American audience that voted in our current prez TWICE and almost unconditionally supported this war on the front end.

Gravatar What if they could get enough combat troops to do a real counterinsurgency? Would you support the "surge" in that case?

Gravatar The time for ‘more’ troops was on the front end of this train wreck. Sending more people over there now, without a clear and well defined outcome or objective (still) is only going to cost more lives. Expect escalation both in the short and long term with any surge.

I was very unimpressed with Mr. prez’s speech last night… he added nothing new and stayed-the-course with his stay the course mentality. Some needs to stop pulling the string in the back of his head.
