Thallium is cheap, I understand, if it used as a component of rat poison.

I've only heard on one murderer to use it (at least here in the UK) and that was the serial killer graham Young. He killed his stepmother in the early 60s, got sent to Broadmoor (a secure psychatric hospital). He was released and promptly mudered some of his work colleages.
