Hasn't Chief Rabbi got nothing better to do than take offense at a simple act of love for a man? It's thought that counts surely?

I can only say, Plip, that religious clerics are rarely known for their sense of humor. Not every one of them is, for example, Garrison Keillor.

I would have left it alone. I think removing it is an insult to the wife quite frankly.

I would perhaps add something to the gravestone rather than erase what is on it, which after all is rather sweet. Perhaps they should just add the man's Hebrew name and yahrzeit, perhaps his parents' names too.

I remember reading a Hasidic tale in which the rebbe (Moshe of Sasov) tells of being in a tavern and learning a lesson about love from the conversation two peasants.
And many people must know the one about the untutored boy who doesn't know how to pray so he plays his whistle in front of the ark.

A wiser man would have recognized in this gravestone the expression of someone who had no formal learning but certainly had commitment and a heart.

Aw.. that is so sweet. She could have just buried him without it.
I say keep it.
People are so silly to get into 'form'.

Funny, tender story. They should have left it alone, the jerks. As for Keilor, when he gets on one of his anti-Bush rants, he isn't funny at all.

Oh well, Dick, no one is perfect. But you see, I have never heard Keillor in one of these rants, so it is easy for me to like him.

I guess I've heard him too much, on both occasions.

Saw another weblog item on this same story - but according to a newsletter that the weblogger gets weekly from South Africa, "Some years later, the words in Hebrew were removed by an over zealous rabbi who was visiting the small Jewish cemetery in the town."
