If Bush had steered hard to the right for 8 years, the following would not have happened:

1) The Medicare expansion.

2) The farm subsidy bill.

3) The transportation pork bill.

4) The torture issue.

5) The whole fight over Habeus Corpus.

The invasion of Iraq probably wouldn't have happened either. It was only by moderating his views that he became the big spender that cost him the Republican reputation.
