WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 (HalliburtonWatch.org) -- The U.S. military spies on individuals protesting Halliburton, Newsweek reports today.
In an article titled, "The Other Big Brother," investigative journalist Michael Isikoff reports that a "harmless" anti-Halliburton protest in 2004 by 10 peace activists outside the company's Houston headquarters "was regarded as a potential threat to national security" by people inside the Bush administration.
The purpose of the 2004 protest "was to call attention to allegations that the company was overcharging on a food contract for troops in Iraq," Isikoff writes. The protest was organized by anti-Halliburton activist Scott Parkin, who was deported by the government of Australia in 2005 for organizing peaceful teach-ins on Halliburton's war contracts.
Isikoff reports that the spying activity was conducted by the ultra-secret Counterintelligence Field Activity (CIFA), created three years ago by the Defense Department to track threats and terrorist plots against military installations and personnel inside the United States.
According to Isikoff, "In May 2003, Paul Wolfowitz, then deputy Defense secretary, authorized a fact-gathering operation code-named TALON—short for Threat and Local Observation Notice—that would collect 'raw information' about 'suspicious incidents.' The data would be fed to CIFA to help the Pentagon's 'terrorism threat warning process,' according to an internal Pentagon memo."
But the article says the leaders of the domestic spying program admit "the outfit may have gone too far."
Isikoff reports that "there are now questions about whether CIFA exceeded its authority and conducted unauthorized spying on innocent people and organizations." A Pentagon memo obtained by Isikoff reveals that the deputy Defense secretary "now acknowledges that some TALON reports may have contained information on U.S. citizens and groups that never should have been retained." The number of citizens named in the TALON reports "could be in the thousands," says a senior Pentagon official quoted by Isikoff.
These revelations are the latest in several recent disclosures showing that the Bush administration is spying on benign peace groups and individuals in the name of national security.
Vice President Dick Cheney called the spy program "vital" to the country's defense against al Qaeda. "Either we are serious about fighting this war on terror or not," he said in a speech to the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank. Isikoff said the new information about CIFA shows "the scope of the U.S. government's spying on Americans may be far more extensive than the public realizes," adding, "It isn't clear how many groups and individuals were snagged by CIFA's dragnet."
Isikoff's article concludes: "A Pentagon spokesman declined to say why a private company like Halliburton would be deserving of CIFA's protection." But since the military has worked closely with contractors in the past, the Defense Department has included the protection of military contractors in its spy program.

About the Commission
The Continuity of Government Commission was launched in the fall of 2002 in order to study and recommend reforms to ensure the continuity of our governmental institutions in the event of a catastrophic attack.
The commission is an American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and the Brookings Institution project headquartered at AEI. It is funded by the Carnegie, Hewlett, Packard, and MacArthur foundations. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford are the honorary co-chairs of the commission and Lloyd Cutler and Alan Simpson are the chairmen. The commission includes members who have served in government at the highest levels.
The commission first focused its attention on preserving Congress, and has now turned to the executive and the Supreme Court. The central issue that the commission addressed is how Congress could function if a large number of members were killed or incapacitated. The problem is most acute in the House of Representatives because the Constitution requires that all vacancies be filled by special election, and it takes four months on average to fill these seats. If there were mass vacancies, the House might not even be able to meet its quorum requirement, or it might operate with a small and unrepresentative number. A second problem is that of incapacity. There is no precedent for filling temporary vacancies so both houses of Congress would be severely diminished, or unable to operate at all, if a large number of members were incapacitated. The events of September 11th led to several ongoing efforts to preserve the continuity of Congress. There was a similar effort in the 1950s and 1960s to deal with these same issues.
In addition, the commission will deal both with the continuity of the Supreme Court, which has a quorum requirement, and with potential reforms to the Presidential Succession Act.The commission met twice in the fall of 2002 to hear testimony and formulate recommendations. It issued a report in June of 2003 on the continuity of Congress. The second phase of the commission has begun addressing presidential succession and will include discussion of continuity in the Supreme Court.
Areas of Investigation
The Continuity of Government Commission will address the continuity of all three branches of government:
Continuity of Congress - The central issue the commission will address is how Congress would function after a terrorist attack. Because of the possibility of large numbers of incapacitated members or vacancies, Congress might not be able to function unless some provision is made to replace members who are deceased or unable to perform their duties. A crippled Congress might not even be able to meet its quorum requirement in a time of crisis.
Presidential Succession - In a second phase of the project, the commission will look at issues surrounding the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, with an eye to ensure that there is a clear transfer of power to the appropriate successor in a time of crisis.
Continuity of the Supreme Court - In the aftermath of a terrorist attack, there might be significant institutional questions over which the Supreme Court would have to rule. The Supreme Court has a quorum requirement of six, and there are a number of other questions about the status of lower court appeals if the Court were disabled for a significant amount of time.
Continuity of Congress
But for the heroic efforts of the passengers of United Flight 93, that plane might very well have crashed into the Capitol building when Congress was in session. The resulting deaths and injuries might have caused the Congress to cease functioning altogether for a number of months.
There are two issues that threaten the continuity of Congress after a terrorist attack: mass vacancies and incapacitated members. The issue of mass vacancies affects the House of Representatives where vacancies are filled only by special election, unlike the Senate where governors may make immediate temporary appointments. Special elections are governed by state laws, and, on average, it takes four months to elect a new member to fill a vacant seat. Depending on the number of vacancies, the House might not even be able to field a quorum, or it might have to operate with a skeleton crew of members not representative of the country as a whole. The second issue of incapacitated members affects both the House and the Senate. Neither body has regular procedures to deal with incapacitated members. In the past, members who have serious incapacities that prevent them from performing their duties were left in place until the end of their terms. If a large number of members were temporarily unable to perform their duties due to injuries or infectious diseases, both bodies might not be able to function because of a lack of a quorum.
In the 1950s and 60s, the Senate passed three constitutional amendments giving governors the power to make temporary appointments to fill House vacancies when there were mass vacancies. The House did not act on these measures. After September 11th, Norman Ornstein wrote "What if Congress were Obliterated?" in Roll Call addressing this very issue. On a parallel track, Congressman Brian Baird introduced H.J. Res. 67. A number of other proposals have been introduced or suggested. There have also been a number of hearings before committees in the House.

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
Corruption within the Department of Interior may have allowed oil companies to improperly save billions at the expense of the taxpayers. The Department’s Inspector General has already made at least two criminal referals to the FBI and the Justice Department, and Congressional Democrats have launched several investigations and introduced new legislation to fix the problem.
In a nutshell, oil companies leasing federal land to drill for oil are required to pay the government royalties based on a percentage of their sales. But under the Royalty-in-Kind program, the companies can pay in the form of oil and gas instead of cash. The problem is that oil prices have increased more than the value of the oil and gas royalty revenues being recieved, meaning that the oil companies are managing to withhold a growing amount of their profits from Uncle Sam.
As you might guess, Royalty-in-Kind was proposed and remains supported by the oil industry, and Bush implanted officials with deep ties to the oil industry in charge of the agency responsible for enforcing the program, the Minerals Management Service (MMS).
In light of the growing scandal, MMS Director Johnnie Burton has already announced that she will be retiring by the end of May. Burton started an oil exploration business before becoming a staunch Republican politician in Wyoming, where she developed ties with Dick Cheney. Greg Smith became the new head of MMS, but he just announced his own sudden retirement Tuesday.
"It appears this Administration uses retirement like some perverse witness protection program," said Rep. Nick Rahall. "Get them out of the spotlight and off the list of in-the-know folks who could provide damaging evidence. Instead of Watergate's 'follow the money,' the Bush Administration has "follow the retirements.' "
Rep. Rahall is chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, which held a hearing Wednesday on the Energy Policy Reform and Revitilization Act aimed at eliminating the oil royalty corruption and loopholes, among other things.
Much of the controversy surrounds a mistake inadvertantly created during the Clinton Administration that went unaddressed and not publically acknowledged until 2006. MMS Director Burton claimed at the time that she had only recently discovered the problem, but midlevel officials spotted the mistake in 2000 and the Interior Department’s Inspector General and even top Republicans say she either knew or should have known about the mistake as early as 2004.
The delay allowed oil companies to save more money and prevented the chance for easier lease renegotiations since energy prices were much lower at the time.
But wait, there’s more! A former Interior auditor-turned-whistleblower revealed that he was ordered by senior Washington officials to drop a case against the Kerr-McGee Corporation for cheating the government out of at least $12 million in royalties. A jury found the company guilty of underpayment, though the case remains pending in federal court on appeal.
MMS Director Burton "is a person who apparently never saw an oil and gas royalty payment audit she liked," Rep. Rahall said Wednesday. "Under her reign, the average number of annual audits conducted plummeted from 540 to 144. And left on the wayside were billions of dollars in royalty payments owed to the American people." As MMS Director, Burton was responsible for auditing participating companies.
The Bush Administration (and the oil industry) want the percentage of oil and gas royalties to double by 2009 and continue to insist that the Royalty-in-Kind scheme is simpler and more efficient because it reduces accounting and transaction efforts. But it is this very reduction in reporting through a de facto "honor system" that has allowed oil companies to keep more money while also preventing the Government Accountability Office from being able to evaluate whether the program is actually profitable to the government.
"The fact that the Interior Department would now take steps to expand this program defies logic," Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) said.
Evidence that four top Interior officials were paid as consultants for oil companies hoping for contracts inspired one of the two criminal investigations. With indictments pending and more Congressional hearings planned, there is no telling what else will be revealed in this scandal.

Russia today claimed to have tested a missile capable of penetrating any defence shield erected by the United States, fuelling fears of a new Cold War-style arms race.
-pointless article here, with the amount of nuclear weapons we collectively really DO have, cant these morons figure out it really doesnt matter WHERE these things detonate. theres enough to literally scorch the atmosphere away several times over when once is all it takes to "create" a lifeless lump of clay, even if some these things are taken out before they hit their targets. the US defense shield and the STAR WARS ideas are PURE BULLSHIT and a ridiculous waste of money and resources.. what is this shield going to do about cleaning up depleted uranium allover the middle east, can it magically cure all the radiation poisoning and genetic damages to the people there?! this is not just "those towelheads" .. our own troops over there are suffering for DU too, coming home infecting their families and having insurance policies cancelled for it too. the whole commercialization of "support our troops" is a sick joke. I still believe the government and the military industrial complex does NOT WANT to bring some 200,000 troops home because millions of people WOULD see their health deteriorate rapidly and alarm us to this reality. it is already not only an illegal war, it is also illegal nuclear weapons of war being used, depleted uranium.

About this Michael Rothschild, i really don´t know anything about him, i suppose the easiest way to find out his relation to the banking family is to email him, he doesn´t seem all that shy. However the article points out one thing which is deeply disturbing. How would you fight a completely corrupted congress and a centralized and controlled media? Wouldn´t you agree that the only way to do it would be to install a king? We both know that congress is under more or less complete control, so why limit their power? They have been all too willing to pass any crazy legislation Bush has thrown at them. I have never really subscribed to the myth of a completely homogeneous new world order, but could it be that we are seeing the final showdown here? If so, it could even be that Bush and Cheney represents the lesser of two evils, not a pleasant outlook really. In fact (and this is just over speculation on my part) the Bush faction represents an actual solution if you stretch the scenario a bit. Now that Bush has actually taken dictatorial powers and made himself king, he can be overthrown and the republic resurrected. This could never happen with a shadow government that we could not see and almost no one wanted to belive in. In a sense King George is an open target unlike what the money kings ever were, this would even make him a martyr for the republic, what a sick thought...

Some of the arguements and "evidence" whether or not they are intentional follow a pattern that are too familiar. We are continually being led to a disney one side v. another side world.
Anyway, the article takes a noticable shift with this paragraph:

His attampt to simplify the whole winning/losing of the Vietnam war because of a limited initiative does not hold water. In addition, we were obeying Russia and China's ongoing negotiations. Vietnam and Cambodia was an international elite agreement to make a shitload of money and conduct testing.
In addition, Vietnam is not as dire as the author makes it look. I get highly skeptical of people that say "we could have won in vietnam and saved that terrible country."
There was no war, it was an occupation and the goal was to make Bell Helicopter and Monsanto rich (as well as others).

The cloaking devices that are used to render spacecraft invisible in Star Trek might just work in reality, two mathematicians have claimed. They have outlined their concept in a research paper published in one of the UK Royal Society's scientific journals. Here is some of work with gold nanorods which show the negative index effect. However, the nanorods are too large and too much light is absorbed. Applications are any technology where sub-wavelengths would provide performance benefits. Various optical related electronics can get smaller. It could be used for photo-nanolithography. Shotgun hell, be smart and get at least a 30-06 and a good .22, pistol and rifle, ruger 10-22 is a good model. Handguns are great, revolvers are more reliable, you can get two of those for the price of a semi auto pistol.
Don't bring a pistol or shotgun or a little .22 to a rifle fight...........(the .22 is more for survival off the land, rabbits and even deer can be had with just the lowly .22).

At first, it seems like a no-brainer. Russia, though no longer a Cold War threat, still has thousands of nuclear missiles capable of hitting the United States, and control over these nukes - like just about everything else in Russia - is unreliable.
President Vladimir V. Putin won't mash the red button, but a mob headed by a crazed Russian general or scientist could hijack one of these missiles. It's also possible that one could be launched by accident.
Or what about Osama bin Laden or some other terrorist? Or a rogue country? In July 1998, a commission headed by Donald H. Rumsfeld, now the U.S. secretary of defense, warned that the ballistic missile threat to our country is "broader, more mature and evolving more rapidly than has been reported" by U.S. intelligence agencies. Countries like Iran, Iraq or North Korea might be able to develop a missile capable of hitting the United States within as little as five years of a decision to do so, the commission warned.
A few weeks later, as if to ratify this warning, North Korea test-fired a missile that flew over Japan before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.
In spite of this documented and demonstrated danger, and even though our country possesses some of the best scientific brains in the world, we still don't have a defense against a ballistic missile attack. Isn't it just a matter of common sense to build one? Don't we owe this protection to our children, if not to ourselves?
Along with many others, President Bush has given an emphatic "yes" to both these questions, and he and Rumsfeld have vowed to build such an umbrella.
But there are very solid, very compelling reasons why a defense against a rogue missile attack is not possible, or even necessary.

Gwynne and Larry Gurwin, Nordex was also suspected of having shipped mobile Scud missile launchers from North Korea to Saddam Hussein in Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War. He then showed me a very big tent. Through the crack of the door I saw a very bright light. It was so powerful that I couldn't look at it straight. Through the lightning I heard a voice that said, "Behold, this is the camp of God, in which sit the chosen ones."
When I looked through the light of the tent I saw Christ. Then I heard a voice say, "These are all my redeemed which are on the earth who have a clean life and who are washed in my blood."
After that I heard a loud clap of thunder. Then I woke up. I went and told my family and now I wanted to share it with you.
