But rather than pointing the finger at Christian conservatives and considering this message part of some anti-homosexual conspiracy, I think it should be seen as the logical result of the welfare state. Teenage pregnancies rarely lead to the father's taking responsibility as Fred Thompson did when he found himself facing fatherhood at 17. Rather, if the young mother does not kill the baby in utero, she is likely to end up undereducated and on state assistance, and the kid ends up with two strikes against it before it even gets started. DHS figures if they can help prevent teenage pregnancies, they'll have fewer adults and kids to support, thus justifying in their own logic the expense of the PSAs.
Fnork, interesting perspective, but I don't make the connection between this and "the welfare state." If conservative Christians and the U.S. government weren't anti-birth control, there would be a lot fewer unwanted pregnancies. If health insurance paid for birth control like they pay for Viagra, for instance.
This is more a sexist statement than having anything to do with the "welfare state" (which I believe is a state of mind these days).
I also didn't get this as an anti-homosexual thing, per se. But when you're spreading a message that you can't have sex until you're married, and gays can't marry, well, you're basically telling gays to be celebate. That's just the consequence of that message.
Fundies tell their kids "marry for sex" then wonder why they marry the wrong people, too young, and end up getting divorced at twice the rate of normal people.
Now they're using our money to tell our kids to marry for sex? No thank you. I've seen enough of what happens when people make the most important decision of their lives with a part of their body that is not their brain.
Fundies fuck up their own kids' lives bad enough, they're not getting mine.
