Hey Southern Beale! Great post, as usual.
I got my very first Paulista over at the home page. He called taxes "stolen money." Awwwww, ain't they adorable?

What I don't understand is why this sensitive data was stored on a laptop hard drive. That's the type of data that should only be on a password-accessible server. I used to work for a casino and would download sensitive data regularly to a desktop computer, but routinely encrypted and/or erased the data so that SSNs were only on the central, very secure server. This is just basic security stuff, folks. Sheesh.

Election officials use the data on election day to verify registrations at the polls. That said, there is no excuse for any data of that type to be unencrypted on any computer or server.
My guess is that someone is interested in screwing around with voter registrations, with some potential identity-theft profit as a sweetener. Second guess: Davidson County election officials have room-temperature IQs.
I'm going to put a fraud alert on my credit file today and suggest that you do, too, if you live in the county that is Home to the Grand Ole Opry.
Hi, madamab. "Saw" you over at Hecate's place, too.
Gotta go back to work--later, all.

I saw an interview in which Ray Barrett said they "suddenly realized" they didn't need the *entire* social security number to verify ID, just the last four numbers. And the laptops were out because that very data issue was being corrected.
I wonder who else besides Ray Barrett and the folks working on those computers knew that?

My kids lived in Davidson County - there's something wrong with that entire bunch at city hall.

Look, this isn't on topic,
But Katherine Coble has instituted unilateral a unilateral ban against Jeffraham Prestonian at MCB. Her reasons were rather cryptic but here are the reports:

I have pledged to ignore MCB in response.
Apparently Katherine has her agenda, but I won’t support it.

Thanks for the update, RoR. They banned William for similarly stupid reasons. I love Libertarians, don't you? Everything's nice and "unrestrained free market" and stuff, until someone's ego gets involved.
