I don't really see the point of Flickr, either.
I would like my extended family to use flickr if possible. The husband's aunt keeps emailing us jpgs, and for some reason they are always corrupted so we only get the top half. Then there are also two cousins with children, and his brother and parents, all of whom don't have the technical savvy to set up a website, or who don't care to. But that's really the only reason I have to use flickr.
if they don't have the technical savvy, how are they ever going to navigate flickr? i mean really, how easy is geocities? And if someone can't email a file without corrupting it, what's to say it'll be any less corrupted elsewhere? tell them to snail mail the camera to you, it'll save everyone the hassles and time.
What I use Flickr for: party snaps. It's a great place to dump 20 dumb pictures from a party and then just email people the link and they can download the picture of themeselves if they want.
But yeah, all my good pictures I put up on my own site. (I did dump some Chicago pictures up there yesterday, but just so they'd show up in the Metroblog header.)
