Why did you vow never to return to Haiti? Did something happen that turned you off to the country? Was it political instability?

If you feel that you can't return to Haiti, is there another French / Creole speaking island in the Caribbean that you would consider visiting? Something with a similar climate?

Or...here's another suggestion. How's your Spanish? Have you considered Costa Rica? One of my friends spent a summer there and loved it. I also considered organizing a school trip there. They also have some great national parks, so if you enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities, Costa Rica might be a good fit for you. I hear that the Arenal Volcano region and Monteverde cloud forest are very beautiful. You might also want to check out the Braulio Carrillo National Park and Tortugero.

At any rate, it sounds like you need a break from Chicago for awhile. Hang in there!
