Hi Spacefan,
I am a longtime fan of your blog, and I recently wrote an article on Automated External Defibrillators (in light of recent Straits Times coverage):
When Hearts Stop: CPR & Defibrillators
Would be most grateful if you could drop by and see if I've missed out anything important, since you're the resuscitation expert after all!
Best wishes,
Speranza Nuova

speranza nuova: i read your post and think it's accurate and well-informed. you may want to try this link as well:

newspast.html
i can't retrieve the issue due to server problems, but it should be either Jan or Feb 2006. look for the article titled "Working Towards a Heartsafe Singapore".
as you can see, this campaign about CPR and AEDs kicked off a year ago, but met with significant resistance and hasn't been as warmly received as we would've hoped. the foremost authority on this subject is Prof Anantharaman, whose optimism is laudable. Another expert is Dr Marcus Ong - also from SGH - who specializes in the pre-hospital aspect of emergency medicine and has done extensive research on out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.
A friend with politicial contacts also assures me he's highlighted this problem to the "powers that be". We'll see what comes out of that.
Perhaps I'll write more about this at a later date - ie. after my exam - but at this juncture, I'm not particularly hopeful in view of the local population's reluctance ( among both doctors and laypeople ) to take on the responsibility of bystander CPR and AED storage / maintenance and use.

Re: the part about Benton turfing the work to the M3, yes, it can happen in a crummy, overly busy hospital. have seen that as a medstudent.

Spacefan: Do you mind if I reproduce your comment on my blog, together with the link to the Saving Hearts article? Many thanks for the reply, and all the best for your exam!

speranza: sure btw does the SMA news link work now?
vagus: point noted. i personally think it's good training. wish i'd had more experience with real pts and relatives during my med school days instead of being hurled into the deep end as a HO.

Only started to watch House, MD - borrowed DVD from my friend - and i really enjoyed that show! seems like the only intellectual one amongst all medical dramas. It makes me even wanna be an internist! ;P

Spacefan: Yes, the SMA News link works now. And I've also found the actual link to the article, and included it on my blog.

glaywitch: house is probably the most medically unrealistic drama i'm aware of. well, maybe that and Doogie Howser MD but no one's ever heard of that now.
so i wouldn't base a career as an internist on that show.
