Gravatar Seriously? No shampoo? I also have really fine and really oily hair and have struggled for #@#$#%$#% years not to have flat hair. I've been using SunSilk AntiFlat shampoo and gel, with limited success. Then I went to short hair last year; really short hair. Halle Berry short hair. Now I have short, fine, oily hair with cowlicks. I'm going to take 2 weeks off in July and think I'm going to try this. Seriously? No shampoo?

Gravatar Hang in there. I wash my hair only once a week and it is fantastic. Hair is much healthier, shiner, better looking, etc. I started doing this after I met my Russian mother in law and she became horrified to learn that I was washing my hair every two days. According to her, it is BAD FOR THE HAIR to wash it more than once a week!

Gravatar it looks great! When I had dreadlocks I didn't wash my hair for, umm doing mental adding up, 5 years I think! Didn't even do the rinsing thing you're doing, just left well alone and ignored it and it was fine.

I've yet to find anything that really works for my really thick heavy hair, I tend to wash it once a week and then ignore it and not look in mirrors! :o)

Gravatar My mom washed our hair in the kitchen sink when we were kids...and always rinsed it out with vinegar. I have memories of having a sore neck (from having to bend over the sink forwards) and people saying to me, "Your hair is so pretty. What do you use on it?" I was embarassed about the vinegar, so I never answered.

Gravatar Very interesting. I'm going to try it this week!!! Thanks for sharing.

Gravatar Nice hair!

Many years ago I met a couple who had beautiful hair...and they hadn't washed their hair for six weeks. I have rather oily hair and if I don't wash it I find my face gets oilier than normal. Did you find any different with the oil on your face during this experiment? Maybe a way to avoid the whole paraben issue is to not even wash my hair in the first place, hunh?

Gravatar I'm SOLD. I'm going to start this tomorrow. I already have used nothing but baking soda for deodorant for many, many years now....it's the only thing that works for me, and no horrible chemicals under my arms. I'm going to try your method, which seems to differ slightly from the online articles you linked. It's a hoot...I just recently started cleaning the toilets with nothing but baking soda and vinegar. Now my hair. Hahah.

Gravatar I have naturally curly hair and I only wash mine about once a week too. I use conditioner on mine very day when I take a shower though. My curls need it. I also condition before washing. I only wash it more often when it needs it. (Like after running a house fire. But I still condition it first.) Check out http://www.naturallycurly.com for more info on the no-poo method.

Gravatar Your hair looks great!

I like mine a lot better when I don't wash it daily, too. I only wash it every 2-3 days.

Gravatar Your hair looks great! I see a big difference.

Not to compare you to a pet, mind you...but I wonder if this treatment might also work on dogs, especially those that have double coats. Even mild shampoos can irritate their skin, poor things. Maybe worth a try? If we do it, I'll let you know how it turns out...

Gravatar this is completely fascinating!

So- how's it going now? I want to try it, but am afraid... I know I'm addicted to the idea of shampooing. I get greasy hair very easily.

But... maybe if I tricked myself mentally with the baking soda and vinegar thing.

>here by way of eGullet

Gravatar My hair is fine and very oily too - I wash every morning and by the end of the day it looks like it needs washing again. I tried no shampoo for 3 days and it was DREADFUL - sooooo oily and disgusting. However, I like the idea of baking soda and vinegar - I think I'll try that and see if it's any better.

I have a 3 year old and I have never washed his hair (just rub with the bathwater) with shampoo and he has wonderful shiny healthy hair.

Gravatar I haven't used shampoo in 7 days- inspired by this post!

Its worked really well- and I use to get oily hair the second day of no washing. Not anymore!

I put my vinegar in a spray bottle in the shower.

Gravatar I tried this last night. Thanks, by the way. My hair came out nicely-conditioned feeling.

I added a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to the plain water rinse to get a nice smell. It worked.

Gravatar I have come to this place by accident! So many of my girlfriends are like 2x a day shower people. I have a ton of hair and washing it has always been a PITA. With all of my preganancies I'd get to the point where I could go 5 days w/o washing, and if I tried to wash every day my hair would FREAK out. And now we're back to the same place. The day I wash it, it looks terrible. I have so much hair and it's so thick it needs the natrual oils to hang better. So now I go with the flow and wash it every 3-5 days. SO much better. Haven't tried any "natrual" rinses... might have to!

Thanks so much for sharing with me!

Tanya

Gravatar I have fine, thin, oily hair too, so I tried this. I use about 2 T b. soda in as much water. Really massage it in well at my forehead hairline, nape of neck, and crown. Feels a bit odd, and I was afraid my hair'd be a tangled mess, but no! I use Bragg's AC vinegar as the rinse, for some reason it doesn't have the acrid 'vinegar!' scent. Hair is squeaky as I rinse in our softened water. I'll try the lavender oil that was suggested.

I'm on day 4 now. It looks like it's working!

Gravatar Oh, I am so intrigued! I have fine, but very curly hair. Are you still doing this? Working well for you?

Gravatar Might try this, but won't your hair start to stink after a while? Hair seems to have a gross smell when it hasn't been wached. I haven't washed mine in about three days and it feels heavy, itchy and oily and I can smell hair. When does the heavy oily feeling go away?

Gravatar more than a year has passaed since this post. can you give us an update of the no shampoo method ?

Gravatar I love this! However, I have long(past my bra strap), medium, wavy hair and I have to have conditioner due to the high chalk/mineral level in the water here.

The ACV, Baking Soda and 3 drops of EV Olive Oil reason for the Olive Oil was a hunch I had. It worked gorgeous! I just shampoo my scalp, until the top of my ear and never condition my scalp!

No Chemicals! I am now searching for a after shampoo conditioner that works as good as my Biolage`.
