I hate to say it, but they look like the dreaded popweeds we get in our yard...the seeds blow in from whoknowswhere and they will take over the planet. I don't know the botanical name for them...it's what DH calls them along with the obligatory invective every year when they show up -again.
I have a good companion planting book called Carrots Love Tomatoes. Very helpful...that book, along with Square Foot Gardening and the 20 Minute Vegetable Gardener are musts around here.

I was thinking maybe flax or chicory with those little blue flowers... did you have any seed packets of either?
I think they're very pretty.

I have no guess, but I wanted to let you know that even some of us who have been gardening a while will do this. This year, with baby being born in early spring, I wasn't concentrating on the garden as usual. I had planted some new things this year, and I couldn't remember what I planted in one area. So when something came up, I let it go. By the time I admitted defeat and conceded they were weeds, they were about a food high. Whoops.
