Even when Miller was a leftist, I still thought his material was great. One of the hardest tricks about writing good humor pieces is finding that angle that takes the audience by surprise. Miller's obscure references are phenomenal in that respect.
Now that he's tipping right wing, I love him even more

Ahem... Miller and his team of writers would leave Maher and his team of writers "broken, etc...."
As a friend of a former DM Co-executive producer and writer who now writes for Maher...
You may be surprised how little the stars bring to the party.
There was a "Dennis Miller Rant Generator" app on the web a few years back - which his people shut down because it was turning out funnier stuff than they could write.
As for Maher, snide and snarky is not funny. If it was, Franken and Garofalo would be doing concerts and HBO specials instead of activist-sponsored radio.
You want Left comedy? Dig up Bill Hicks. Funny. Paranoid alarmist, but funny.

What has defined the left since its inception is its total lack of humor and Maher demonstrates that fact very well. He's just not funny. A leftist comic is an oxymoron, in Maher's case you can leave of "oxy" and still have it right.
Defining humor is perilous but I want to believe that at its best it has something to do with love. The hate-filed ravings of the left can never rise to the sublime level of self-transcendant laughter.
