A point of clarification: the columns buried under the floor are NOT the buried remains of a complete older temple - rather they're part of the Egyptian architectural technology to prevent damage from earthquakes and other geological events. The fact still remains that they are the remnants of whatever structure sat on the site prior to the Ptolemaic reconstruction and, since the current structure can't be placed at risk, we'll never really know what's down there.
