So why weren't the hoodlums who attacked and threatened her arrested. Assault is still a crime, right? Oh I forgot. It's only a crime when the victim is a minority.
Although it's unfortunate what happened, are any of us really surprised?
We live in a nation where everyone is allowed free speech, unless they happen to be Caucasian. We live in a country that prosecutes "hate" crimes, yet only prosecutes such crimes when committed against minorities. We live in a country where breaking our laws is okay, provided you aren't a citizen.
Is anyone here surprised how it was handled? The school is now in a hard spot. If they expel the accused, the ACLU will most certainly take interest (although with the wrong party). Marches will be soon to follow, for certain. In the end, some school administrator will try to smooth tensions by saying, "ya know, it was just a bad idea to have such an assignment" without realizing what an insult it is to suggest anything against illegal immigration should just be censored.
Oh, they said that already? Well chalk that up as one more thing that doesn't surprise this patriot.
First I am amazed someone has my name and what a great point. Illegal aliens seem to have rights that are now refused to "white" American Citizens. What has the world come to?
This is not so simple, folks. I spent ten years teaching. It's critically important to remember that these are are just kids. Assault and battery should not be condoned, but arresting kids and punishing them is usually not the answer. Kids need to be taught not to lash out in anger. They need to be taught to talk things out, to try to be tolerant of different viewpoints, to be patient, and most of all to be respectful of others.
Obviously the poor girl who was beaten up is a victim, and should never have been put in this situation in the first place. She should have been protected. Plain and simple. At the same time, it would be wrong to assume that the kids who lashed out are simply "hoodlums." Many hispanic students today feel under attack by the voices they hear from talk radio and Lou Dobbs. Many are racially profiled, and feel afraid. And for adolescent boys, fear turns too easily into anger. The solution is for responsible adults to exercise understanding, maturity, and lead by example. This is a very unfortunate case, and ultimately the teachers and the administration of the school is at fault.
Nice points Steven, but I guess I am wrong when I say that I believe in racial profiling of any type. I am racially profiled when job hunting and usually am turned down due to the white skin I obtain. My spouse is Mexican and after paying thousands of dollars to immigration and waiting years for naturalization, would love the opportunity for racial profiling and prove citizenship to this great land. The only people who are against racial profiling are illegal aliens or the ACLU and I have come to realize that anything the ACLU stands up for, I am always against. They are on the wrong side of every issue.

I am Hispanic and feel that those "Hoodlums" should be punished I grew up in southern California and have never been profiled but then again, I have an American flag sicker on my car, Don't speak with a George Lopez accent, wear baggy pants or throw gang signs while speaking Spanish.
I speak Spanish fluently after living in Mexico for a time. I love the language and even teach it to my child. However, I love my country and am a patriot and speak English. I am not against Mexicans, I love them, especially the ones that stay in Mexico or come the USA with the right documents and live by the rules.

I too encourage legal immigration and have nothing but love for people from any country that come here legally. Hell I will even supply them with links to help them obtain legal status....but I strongly oppose illegal immigration and breaking the first law upon entering this country by coming here in an illegal manner.

This is another socialized government school that doesn't know right from wrong. Those who assaulted this girl should have been cuffed and indicted for felony assault. After sentencing, if illegal, they and their extended families should be scheduled for deportation. Time to stomp these these arrogant, un-American jerks who openly abuse us without reprisal. The fed-up point was passed long ago. Of course we'll never know if they're illegal 'cuz socialized government schools can't ask.
It should be added that Texas is a sanctuary state and Athens is within one of our worst sanctuary areas. Seems to me if nothing happened, the Police Chief wouldn't have said he was adamant to catch the "people who did this." Hayes is covering his butt by saying it would mess up the investigation 'cuz obviously he tried to prevent an investigation. And I'd like to know why Assistant Principal DeRosa believes only a few were involved since the cameras didn't catch the incident and the only testimony at the time was from the victim. Clearly, he's a bald faced liar. And the city needs to tar and feather Superintendent Hayes for trying to blame the sign rather than the criminals who did this. Socialized government school at its best.
Finally, according to the latest news, it looks like the socialized government school won again. In-school suspension for three with the primary blame placed on the project and the sign. And it's not an assault. It's a "scuffle." I'd bet if these socialists would do a proper investigation, they'd find the bullies have acted similarly before. And no one addressed the fact that this child's project was destroyed as if it wasn't private property. Oh well, it's just today's Texas.
When I lived in Mexico, I could not work and had to renew my visa just to be there. Funny, but I cared about the people and wanted to be among them and learn their language and live by their laws. I'm proud of this girl who chose to do a sign and believe that on May 1 when we have these stupid marches all over the U.S. for rights to illegals --- we should comment "IF YOU LOVE OUR NATION, STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION". That is brillant.
My spouse worked hard for legal status and I expect them all to work the same and wait the time and pay the money. Not here - but there.

I agree; the kids should be rounded up and checked out for legal status (sorry all you racial profiling haters, but most Americans are getting sick and tired of shit like this), the school teachers/administrators and especially this vice president should be fired on the spot, and the entire school district get a strict lesson in the law of the land. They seem to obviously feel they are above the law in this case.
Metioning race is irrelevant; Hispanic is NOT a race. It is only a descriptive of Hispania. The misuse started in the 1980 U.S. Census. Special interest groups pushed to have a new box added ("hispanic") to check along WITH race.
True, Hispanic is not a race, but it is the only "political correct" term we have. Saying Mexican is offensive if you are not from Mexico. Latin is reserved for Central Americans only and Spanish is for Spain. Everywhere wants to be represented in the same category. I usually like the term "illegal", but then I'm not politically correct all the time.
Suspension? That is all kids are given for a hate crime? If white students had assaulted a Mexican student there would be lawsuits and the white kids would be expelled. Racism works both ways and is not intrinsic to Caucasians only.
The sad truth is hate crimes are only against whites, they do not pertain to minorities doing the hate crime, only that minorities are on the receiving end of a hate crime from a white person. Sad, but legally true. America is no longer free for the citizen, we have to pay for all the others to live. That includes the lazy citizens who make more money on welfare than if they got a job.
Those children should be expelled and if the parents want them to continue their education, then they should home school the kids and teach them about respect and love and freedom.
The ONLY person who would/should be offended by the sign is an illegal alien themselves, or their equally illegal anchor baby. How will the identity of the culprits be determined if they are illegal? They do not exist according to Social Security records. The Immigration Department does not know who they are because they weren't cleared by them. What status does a "nonexistent" being have? When illegals are hurt, who presses charges? The "plaintiff" does not exist according to U.S. agencies. Just wondering.
For one, do we now the whole story besides what the press prints?? Isn't it kind of ignorant for a 13 yo girl to draft up a sensitive sign like this and present it in school which is by nature a diverse environment? Her parents obviously don't care for her safety..how are you going to send your child to school with with a sign about a sensitive issue? Pretty STUPID no matter how patriotic it is.
