For generations, blacks were referred to as "monkeys" in the dehumanizing atmosphere of Jim Crow racism. Now, just a little over 40 years past the time when the last of the laws that made interracial marriage a felony were struck down once and for all, we are supposed to believe that this t-shirt is not racist? Try this experiment. Instead of Curious George on an Obama 2008 shirt being sold by a conservative Georgia bar owner, substitute a Joe Lieberman 2006 t-shirt. The shirt has a picture straight out of 1930's Nazi propaganda. It shows a stereotypical jewish person with a big nose and holding a bag full of money. To round out the picture, the t-shirt is being sold by a liberal group such as moveon.org. Are you telling me that the same people defending the Obama t-shirt would not be jumping up and down railing about the anti-semitic bigotry of liberals? The t-shirt is racist pure and simple. If racism against blacks does not bother you, at least have the guts to admit it and stop hiding behind the nonsense that the shirt is not representative of the kind of obscene racism that existed in this country just a few decades ago, and apparently in some corners of our republic, is alive and well. Here's the deal, if Obama loses in November, we who support him will refrain from yelling racism, as long as his opponents refrain from using racism in the campaign against him. As I savored a yummy chew treat last night, I saw on TV a story I can only describe as disturbing about a strange man in my home state who believes portraying an African American as a monkey is his duty to country. This man -- and I use that term loosely -- is named Mike Norman. He owns a bar in Marietta, Georgia and is selling t-shirts with a picture of the character Curious George with a banana and the words "Obama in '08" under the shirt. He calls the t-shirts a marketing tool and that Mr. Obama had a likeness to the character.
Well, as Dad ranted about the story and the "ignorance" and "bigotry" it showed embedded in our state, I began to think on a positive of the situation. You see, I'm a "glass is half full" rescue pup. Hell, I was days away from gas so I always look at how things can be better. Unlike Mr. Norman, I do not fear a man's color or the way he talks or looks (have you seen Mr. Norman and some of his defenders -- now that's some scary stuff). No, I think "how can we use Mr. Norman
’s ‘sadness’ as a positive.” So I thought "the best way to solve this problem of hate is to show that we are above this type of behavior. So, I implore all of those who do not think they have a voice to speak up on Mr. Norman’s actions to send a donation to Obama or Hillary. Would that not be classic! Mr. Norman and his hate-filled defenders having to watch Obama or Hillary as their leader for the next four years -- classic!
At 63 and a southerner, Mr. Norman is a white man who is part of a group who has always had all the power. Well times have changed and the differences in each of us, should and will make us a better country. Mr. Norman, however, does not seem to care about the strength in our diversity. At his age and apparent lack of intellectual “curiosity”, he is unlikely to ever change his views and is stuck in a self-made state of mistrust and ignorance. And what is even sadder is that his children and grandchildren are victims of his ignorant influence.
Yes, I suppose Dad did accurately describe Mr. Norman as a bigot and hate-monger. And other Dad referred to him as a POS (Piece of...). But I could only call him a sad man. He really believes this to be a way to talk about and label another human being. That's sad people. This liberal dog believes a prayer (yes, a liberal who prays) is best for Mr. Norman. So remember this "sad" man in your prayers. And pray he sees the error of his ways. And if we are really lucky, the GOP will ask him to follow Anne Coulter on the stage at this summer's Republican Convention. Good night all!!

Well, I'm not sure about the wedding; I told my daughter that she had to wait until she was 40; she said, in no uncertain terms, that she felt 23 was old enough. So, she graduates from Boise State University this week, walks the plank on Saturday, and gets married on the 7th of June. Only cost me about 20 Gs ... Egads! I better write another book.

Whites don't have a history of being demeaned as a race by being compared to monkeys, so comparing GWB to Curious George doesn't carry the same cultural baggage.
The implied jibe with GWB would be that he himself is chimplike. It's an insult, but only at GWB. It doesn't go beyond that.
The implied insult with Obama does. It plays on a history of racial insults and prejudice. Its message is more like, "Obama may be running for president, but he's still a nigger, and will always be less than a white person."
Part of the insult is the ability for the wearer to claim that they're just making an innocent comparison of Obama and the face of a children's book character. If it's just about the resemblance, why show the monkey eating a banana, too? Does Barack love bananas?
I like what T.J wrote above about the Republican party embracing blacks like Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell. I can guarantee if you asked either of those folks if this shirt was racist, they'd tell you it was.
Don't make the Republican party look like idiots by wearing something racist. There are plenty of anti-Obama shirts out there that don't compare the guy to a monkey. Wear one of those and make our country a better place.
NO! I cannot believe I reached this age of 51! And an empty nest. My son is the headline writer and copy editor for the San Diego Union Tribune, which hired him out of college several years ago, so I am alone with dog and cat and garden and quail, songbirds, ravens, marsh hawks, rabbits, deer, antelope, elk and God knows what else out here on the ranch.
But ... no grandkids. I just don't think I could take that. I'm having a hard enough time coming to terms with mortality; I never expected to live past 35 (rough life in the Orient), so this is a bonus, I guess, but age takes the wind out of one's sails in certain paradigms, and I find that it is hard to cope at times.

When I hear the word baboons I chuckle. It reminds me of HS when I was in the orchestra (second violin). It was a Monday morning (7 am) and our conductor was a bit hung over. We were playing Aaron Copeland's "Fanfare For the Common Man". We kept making the same mistake. So our dear conductor said: "I just want to hear from the Baboons." Pointing to the woodwind section. He kept repeating it. It took us a while, but we finally got what he meant to say, Bassoons.
The next day the whole section showed up wearing Monkey masks. And they played that way until graduation.

Attention Hypocrites! We've been hearing people in the media (both black & white) calling George W. Bush a monkey for 8 years now. And he does look like a chimp, especially when he puts his hand on his head. However, now everyone gets their panties in a bunch about this. I've been saying that Obama looks like Curious George for about a year now, and he does!
