Teachers might better be paid to go to a police academy than graduate school. Rather than being trained to deal with crime and violence, teachers are paid extra for accumulating graduate school credits and degrees. The kind of training police officers receive would be extremely beneficial to teachers in public schools. Self-control under stress, handling emergencies, protecting themselves and others, recognizing criminal behavior, and the capacity to make an arrest would be much more useful to practicing teachers than a seminar in "Contemporary Issues in Education". If a school's staff included a number of teachers who were also law officers, the criminal student would be much less inclined to act in a criminal manner, while the majority would feel much more secure.
