What's funny is that you are actually treating the comparison of slavery to a volunteer program that Obama has set as a "goal." Goldberg is an utter joke and you are somehow, despite all logic and rationality, "debating" his claims. Ask the slaves who were kidnapped, put on slave boats and sold as property with no rights whatsoever if they think volunteering for a program to pay for college is akin to slavery or a "slavery mentality." I guess when you join the ROTC to help pay for college, that is contributing to a slave mentality to?
If there are threats attached to "volunteering" then you bet it is slavery.

on topic though, we have a subject option in our highschools called co-op, where the student agrees to find an employer to work for, and the school vets them... but the student does not get paid, just does whatever the employer wants him to do, ie store clerk, serve customers, doctor's receptionist, do secretarial work, the only remuneration is a credit toward their diploma... this is a kind of slavery, but we tend to think of it as giving the kid a peek at the working world... my own son went and did 3 months with a blacksmith, because he thought he would like to be a blacksmith hahaha... changed his mind when he found out there wasn't a lot of money to be made, even as a craftsman... he now plans on making it a hobby...

How can you even talk about this as slavery, this is a program, that actually is one of the first ones that I like that the prudent liberal has put on the table, to make people do service for the community as carazy as it sounds is a sound practice, give people the chance to see how others that may be misfortunate or of a different income bracket live, let the high paid brats come in and see how city life is, how some neighborhoods are very close knit but yet are happy on the simple things in life vs the high materialism life that most kids live today, kids have no respect for life, elders, history, mother nature and even themselves, this program could benefit all children, how can you call this slavery, you must be so enclosed in your little liberal cave that you can't see the big picture, kids need to see how the rest of the world lives, they don't have family dinners anymore because both parents have to work to support their huge mortgage, kids don't get family time, like games, or family outings at the park or stadium, they don't know, this progrma is a new avenue that needs to be visited, but it's just my opinion, the rest of the country needs to see that time should be invested in our children or we are heading to dire straights in the USA.

Regi, volunteering is fine as long as it is done without threats attached.
People do have a right to choose for themselves in thois country.
Dean, yes you are so right, got carried away on the helping our children thread and forgot the real item, yes the threat should not be attached to the whole contribution, hopefully we can all help our kids to learn and help the voluntary way.
