It will be very interesting to see just what sort of increase they have in mind. I guess we can say goodbye to the Rumsfeld high technology doctrine at least till the eventual backlash.

I couldn't believe how badly our military had been defunded and ignored to begin with.

Excellent writeup Spree. Especially on target with the pompous "bloviating, blowhard" O'Reilly. He's a populist if there ever was one and I've lost complete respect for him lately.
He rants about the left for being weak, then he caves in like a crybaby as he feels American public polls pulsing weakly in trends for support of war.
Another words, he does not stand on principles. He stands on latest trends in the winds.
He is exactly the worst of what he's accused everyone else of being. In some ways the words he said border on being incompetent.
No one has asked me for any "sacrifice" whatsover! And that is failed policy in my mind. We should all be giving to help our troops.
Excellent piece by Amy. I'll stop by her site. Thanks!

Didn't anyone notice the over 40% reduction in force during the nineties. Some of us old war horses have pointed this out since 9-11. I've ask where did the equipment go that supplies almost double the force we now have. Some third world country and the money in Slicks bank account? The military was in such bad shape in 2000 the a hundred men in row boats could have invaded and taken control of the country.
Now the IG report on Socks Berger has been released but the documents he managed to steal will never be completely revealed unless someone gets the balls and waterboards socks. It had a lot to do with Osama and probably the impending attack. The big question now is what did slick know about the attack and when did he know it. Maybe someone will snatch socks off the street and get the truth out of him before feeding him to the fish. Works for me.

Works for me too. Yes the reduction was noticed but it wasn't until Bush came in that we even started to build the forces up and Bush has not done it fast enough
Now to be fair, 9-11 did hit in his first year so he HAS beena bit busy, but getting our military up to speed should have been done first thing....despite fault atit being depleted, this shouldn't have waited.

Ridiculous.
What makes you think that "defense" spending SHOULD be in lock-step with GDP?
The richer we are, the bigger the military we should have, irrespective of global politics and conditions?

Say, why don't you move into a reasonably-sized house in Arizona and donate the proceeds to that ridiculously oversized and overdone behemouth of a house you're selling in Illinois?

Scrapiron, one old warhorse to another, I was a part of that reduction in force of the military and find myself asking the same questions. I know some of the equipment was channeled to National Guard and Reserve units, but what about the rest of it? Probably somewhere south of the border now in the control of one cartel or another...
Biscuits, your lack of understanding of the need of a strong national defense force is amazing. Are you saying you PREFER us to be understrength and depleted to the point where 9/11 is a common event?
As to the house, don't take it personal again, or you won't be posting here any more (and no, there is no nerve struck here, that is simply the fact, Jack).
