Dear Snooper -- We have all written so much about this to seemingly no avail. The idiots keep promoting their treasonous garbage and nobody stops them. It goes on and on and on. Each treachorous betrayal worse than the one before. This is the building up of the crescendo, this latest insult to our country will not go unavenged. None of us here will ever let them forget it. Ever.
We will beat them into the ground with their own lying words.

I am so angry I am spitting nails. I sauntered over (big mistake, HUGE!) to Huffington Post, just to see what they were saying. They have called Petraeus every thing except for a father raper (hat tip Arlo).
I am sick to death of these farkin liberals.

I know Michelle, but the good thing is what I just added as an update, after weeding through the bullshit in the NYT piece, you get the one important gem, the Democrats have overplayed their hands insulting our military and Petraeus, as shown by 68% saying they TRUST the military regarding the war.more than the admin, more than congress.
When you attack a man that has given his life to your country, the public tends to rally behind the man (Petraeus), not the attackers (Democrats and far left)

I agree, Spree. They've overplayed their hand bigtime. By insulting an American General during a war and CALLING HIM A TRAITOR! I think they've succeeded in waking a lot of people up. They've let their desperation get the better of them and they're going to pay for it.

And when the REALLY get pissed, they'll never give up and they won't put up with traitors!

Enough is enough already, let's pummel them.

Well, that will be a tough sell to Americans.
Exactly how Gen P enhances his own career in the Army or maybe in politics in Iraq by losing?
OTOH, Pursuing a tactic of killing off Aq wanna be's, Saudi rejects, Syrian Minions, Iranian Revo Guards and wannabe jihadis by the truckload will be hard for Americans not to acknowledge that.
Our sense of fair play is crucial and critics of the surge are not well versed in the fact that their own precious Baker Hton Iraq Study Group calls for a surge. Or, their cry last year about 'Staying the course' wasn't working - they wanted more troops - right? The surge should make everyone happy. Except America's enemies
Like the NIE huggers all cry that the NIE claims America is building terrorists in Iraq. Fair enough - but remember - those are the same cats who said Saddam had 18 suitcases of Ricin in 2002.

It's damn hard to be an honorable person in this political environment. When I feel that emotion, I try to remember the first stanza of my favorite poem:
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

Of course, the reference to knaves making a trap for fools, in the second stanza, is also relevant:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

Thank you, Stevend. And there's still plenty of time for men to be men -- as so many of our great soldiers -- and our brave firemen and cops and so many others -- are proving every day. And as some of our brave vets have proven in the past.
And, unlike those earlier days, there's a place now for a lot of our brave women in this battle, too.

K, ya'll - one of my teachers - u know the type - (Israel evil, Bush Hitler, Communism good, christianity frightening) is spewing stuff about the surge failing (funnily enough - he wouldn't let us watch the Praetrous Report live) because the political sitch in Iraq is so bad.
His big gripe is that the Iraqi pols split dodge for the summer - stead of buddying up w/ each other and working things out in a wonderful place with love and tolerance for all(like the dems and Gop do? Right!!)
Anyway the only counter I can come up with for his weak, boring and inappropiate handwringing is that maybe, that was the plan - get Al Sadr's pols out of cell phone range and surge the daylights out of them.
Do ya'll have any effective counters?

Ask him what HIS credentials are for running a Military operation the size of Iraq compared to General Petraeus:
Then PRINT The Petraeus resume and compare the two:
General David H. Petraeus assumed command of the Multi-National Force-Iraq on February 10th, 2007, following his assignment as the Commanding General, U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth. Prior to assuming command at Ft. Leavenworth, he was the first commander of the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq, which he led from June 2004 to September 2005, and the NATO Training Mission- Iraq, which he commanded from October 2004 to September 2005. That deployment to Iraq followed his command of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), during which he led the “Screaming Eagles” in combat throughout the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His command of the 101st followed a year deployed on Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia, where he was the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations of the NATO Stabilization Force and the Deputy Commander of the US Joint Interagency Counter-Terrorism Task Force-Bosnia. Prior to his tour in Bosnia, he spent two years at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, serving first as the Assistant Division Commander for Operations of the 82nd Airborne Division and then as the Chief of Staff of XVIII Airborne Corps.
General Petraeus was commissioned in the Infantry upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1974. He has held leadership positions in airborne, mechanized, and air assault infantry units in Europe and the United States, including command of a battalion in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and a brigade in the 82nd Airborne Division. In addition, he has held a number of staff assignments: Aide to the Chief of Staff of the Army; battalion, brigade, and division operations officer; Military Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander - Europe; Chief of Operations of the United Nations Force in Haiti; and Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
General Petraeus was the General George C. Marshall Award winner as the top graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Class of 1983. He subsequently earned MPA and Ph.D. degrees in international relations from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and later served as an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the US Military Academy. He also completed a fellowship at Georgetown University.
Awards and decorations earned by General Petraeus include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, two awards of the Distinguished Service Medal, two awards of the Defense Superior Service Medal, four awards of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal for valor, the State Department Superior Honor Award, the NATO Meritorious Service Medal, and the Gold Award of the Iraqi Order of the Date Palm. He is a Master Parachutist and is Air Assault and Ranger qualified. (continued)

He has also earned the Combat Action Badge and French, British, and German Jump Wings. In 2005 he was recognized by the U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s 25 Best Leaders.
THEN after comparing the two, ask him why HIS opinion should carry ANY weight since HE doesn't hold any of the credentials that Petraeus does.
That'll shut him up.

For one thing, it seems that al Maliki was doing some pretty good stuff behind the scenes during this hiatis.
You can't always win against people who have already have set their opinoins in stone. But you can learn the truth for yourself and share it with those still willing to listen.
Listen to some of those who comment on thsi site. I've learned a lot here and I'm sure you could too.

courtney,
Effective counter - It is better for the Iraqi to take their time to come up with the right answer for their vexing issues and not force themselves into a bad solution that will have negative impacts later. If your teach disagrees, ask if the 3/5ths compromise was a good idea.
That said, at one level, I agree with your teach - the Iraqi pols should stick to it till they hammer through the details of a grand compromise or two. It's the least they could do given what's been handed to them. Look inside yourself and if you agree, then it is better to cede that point to your teach.
That said, the Iraqi pols have been at it for months and they have not gotten to a point where they can agree yet. So stepping away from the issue for a few weeks might help all of them gain perspective. So it's not the end of the world.
