I've been to foreign countries where they insist you speak their language. No problem with that, they have every right to insist upon it...oh but not here in liberal lefty land.
English is the primary language of this country so speak English.
If you want to learn another language, fine, that's your choice but I won't have it forced upon me or my children.

I work for a company with a global footprint and 60% our sale is overseas,. As the market is growing globally, we should not only learn Spanish, but also we should learn as many languages we could. My 5 years old daughter actually learning Chinese and I am proud of her. I know that she is preparing for future reality.
It is a common fact that English is a global language. Even the worlds airlines use it to communicate.
Sure, when I travel to other countries (Thailand, China, Japan, Indonesia, etc.) I do want to learn their language. I can speak enough of those languages to get by on a day to day basis. It is important to understand that I am in "their" country. Therefore, when people come to "my" country , I would expect them to learn my language (English).
In a larger sense, and witnessed in my travels, English is used through out the world and has become a common business practice.
Sure, if I am going to a different country, I will study up. I don't expect to live there. If someone comes to my country with the intent to live here, LEARN ENGLISH.
Is this England? No, it was merely overtaken by the English. Can we finally acknowledge our history of imperialism (as the UK has done) and get on with being the melting pot that we truly have become?

What we need is a Constitutional Amendment declaring English as the official and only language of the United States. A provision should be put into the amendment to provide emergency and health services in other languages, but it should not be mandatory.
Ummmmm isn't English the official language of America? I honestly thought it was/is. (However, my first time in Chicago, I was bemused to see English/Spanish signs on the buses...)
Canada is officially bilingual - French and English both are official languages. Does that mean every Canadian speaks both languages, or is expected to speak both? Noooooooo...
BUT it does mean that all federal government services MUST be available in both languages, and we have the CHOICE of French immersion schools across the land..running parallel with the regular English stream.

I personally prefer having a common language not only in America, but also across the globe. Did you know that English language is windily spoken where Obama’s father came, Kenya? It is because of Great Britain past colonization. I would think nobody should be forced to learn any language; it should be rather a choice. I personally have been learning Chinese and Hindi that makes me competitive in the global market and position me understand the unspoken cultural entity of the perspective country. I have seen enormous influence while attempting to speak their language as opposed to English only. Over all, it is up to you to lean or not. However, it has been working for my benefit while traveling for business trips and as employee of a company with global footprint.

I was recently passed up for a job where the candidate they chose was bilingual. Had I been "forced" to take more foreign language classes in school(I was required to have at least 2 years to graduate high school and to get into college) I'd have a great job with a better salary. Bottom line, being bilingual makes you more marketable in the global economy and I can't see why anyone wouldn't want that for themselves or their children.
I don't think anyone disagrees with you in that it makes you more marketable. What the disagreement is about is the fact it's mandated to accomodate those who refuse to assimilate into this country and its culture. That's the bottom line. My own daughter is a court interpreter in ASL, Spanish and French. Her choices in growing up and she' s capitalized on it. The fact remains, though, those were her choices, not forced on her.
If people don't want to assimilate into this country and adopt the language and culture, get the hell out. Period.

For everyone you can "produce" to say it's a lie, there are just as many we can produce to say it's not. The bottom line is, based upon islam, and the research we've done through our koranic educations, etc., they are not lies. We can't trust bho to tell the truth so using outside, objective sources becomes a must.

If the ultimate goal is to make us better communicators, which opens doors not only in this country and abroad, thereby improving the qualities of ours and our children's lives, then what's the harm in learning a foreign language in school? No one is proposing replacing English with Spanish to accomodate "illegals". Miss Beth- why is it so important to assimilate? Do you feel threatened that the people speaking Spanish behind you in line at the grocery store are talking about you? It all sounds like elitist, ethnocentric thinking to me.
I don't know where you live, but i live in a border area and happen to be quite fluent myself, so get off your damn name calling, got it? This country is a melting pot with it's own culture--if people don't want this culture get the hell out. My ancestors gave up their countries to be AMERICAN. Mindsets like yours are the reason America was formed in the first place...to escape persecution for being different. Imagine if early colonists from Brittain had just stayed there and "assimilated". Let's see .. LIBTARDS are attempting to make the US bi lingual with possible preference to having Spanish suopersede Emglish.. Wonder how Mexico would treat therse Morons if the y were to go south of the border and attempt to make English mandadtory down there or to Canada with the "plan" ... and BTW English, like it or not, is the Worl's language for Business, Transportation, ( airlines especially) and many English words have already become incorporated in various European languages..
What I like about McCain is , he is not like any other typical politician. I think the country needs more of like McCain. He categorically rejected about Obama’s caricature in the New Yorker. I want the issues to be discussed thoroughly and let the American people decided. When this high level discussion is done, the choice is clear for everyone. At the end of the day, everyone want food on the table, energy security, health care…I believe McCain will transformed the politics of the capital hill and he strongly believe in working with the other side of the aisle rather than slash and burn politics. Additionally, he believes in green house and we should be doing something about it.
