I have never been a fan ... not by a long shot ... of the United Nations. It is appalling what this group of anti-Americans get away with.

First of all, of the 192 countries that are part of the UN, the USA has a mandatory 22% assessment to the UN ... almost one fifth of the annual operating budget. In addition, we are \"mandated\" to pay 27% of the Peace Keeping operations, no matter the total costs. And who are we defending?

The best part of this liberal scam is the fact that the above numbers are mandated; we MUST pay these percentage. However, because we are the most generous country this worthless planet of greedy people has ever seen that we also are encouraged to give more, through a voluntary system, which we do.

It it also notable that of the 192 countries, of which over 150 of them pay less than one-tenth of one percent (0.01% for those who cannot read), the United States is the ONLY country that has EVER met its required rate of payment to the UN. It is despicable that we stay in this union of thugs.

The top paying countries ( of which we now know that only the US pays the required amount) are: United States at 22%; Japan at 19.47%; Germany at 8.66%; United Kingdom at 6.13%; France at 6.03%; and Italy at 4.89%. It only goes down from there. For those of you are not able to add, these countries pay a whopping 67.18% of the UN's operating budget; the other 188 countries pay the other 32.89%. What a deal.

As for Peace Keeping expenses, once again we see the same western countries laying out the lion's share. The top ten countries that pay for the UN charade of a military are, in order of money outlaid, are: United States at 27% (no surprise here); Japan; Germany; United Kingdom; France; Italy; China; Canada; Spain; and South Korea.

Where are our friends the Saudis, who are building the largest, most expensive and energetic complexes in the world, the largest, most expensive hotels ($28,000 to $40,000 a night)? Or, for that matter, the rest of of the oil-rich nations?

I get sick and tired of the bleeding-hearts of this country ... and the world, for that matter, always blaming the US for the planet/universe/you-name-it's problems. If we had an evil thought in our country's conscious, we would tie the value of a bushel of wheat, corn, and vegetables to the price of a barrel of oil to all oil producing countries from which we import the stuff. Now THAT would put us on a level playing field.

I can't help but feel that we are being forced into a position of becoming an isolationist country. And, quite honestly, it may do the world some good to see just how long they can last without our food and money.

OK ... I have had a bad day. I'm done ranting, so all you pro-UN clowns can try and justify your position. I'm going out to roto-till the garden/orchard ....
           T.J. | 05.05.08 - 6:19 pm | #

Perhaps the U.N. would be better suited with their building in \"Palestine\". All military personnel in the blue berets are only there temporarily, usually for six months. Then, they go back to their countries of origin. They are on loan to the UN, they are not part of the UN.
The UN does not have full command of these people. That remains with the countries from which they come. If a soldier commits a crime while on UN duty, it is his home country that must punish him - not the UN. Some countries obviously do not have very high standards for military conduct, some are quite franksly despotic dictatorships. Yet, they can contribute soldiers to a mission, rotating the personnel every six months or year.
Overall I found this article not very good. It is misleading to the point of salaciousness. You miss a crucial point in understanding how the member countries contribute military forces to missions, and the legal implications this creates.
I think you would do your readership a better service if you actually took time to research and understand the concepts behind the UN military forces.
If this were a paper from one of my middle school students, I would rate it a D.
           Goalie | 05.13.08 - 1:59 pm | #

The UN is a thorough disgrace.
