Gravatar Amen.

Gravatar Fantastic, couldn't agree more.

Gravatar "A sly tyrant who uses the power of taxation to manipulate personal behavior, redistribute wealth, and deny personal freedom."

Probably of more danger is the left-leaning do-gooder who honestly thinks it is within the mandate and the power of the government to solve all problems. Tyrants eventually end up hanging from a streetlamp. Left-leaning do-gooders just keep talking about compassion and an electorate who has never been trained to think just keeps on electing them.

Gravatar Hear! Hear!
Excellent post, Spunky.

I tire quickly of politics when all I can see are candidates who seem to have read "1984" as an instruction manual.
I have a feeling the only chance for common sense leadership is on the local level. We just had an election here to send a state rep to d.c. and a REAL conservative was voted in to replace the long-time incumbent who thought he was conservative. It was quite an upset.
There's some change I can believe in.

Gravatar Local politics is interesting as well Julia, and part of the reason for this post. I've had four judges come to my door in the last week seeking my vote. I've asked them all the basic set of questions, what is your worldview and what standard do you use to make your decisions? The answers have been laughable, none of them wanted to commit to anything concrete. They all wandered aimlessly hoping to hit something coherent. It was sad. After these conversations, my children have basically decided that it doesn't take much to get elected to office.

Gravatar "I call on the great people of this country to leave these men behind and demand candidates who understand that they are not the savior, but the servant of the people."

Indeed. Those who lead must actually know how to follow and have a servant's heart, not, for instance, a narcissist's profile.

"After all an election is a terrible thing to waste."

And so is our freedom.

Gravatar Four judges who stand for nothing...that is sad. Here's hoping that if it doesn't take much to get elected to office--it won't take much to get booted out.

Gravatar I'm not holding much hope, the last judge to hold this position was in it for years and just retired. Those running know that if they are elected they'll be there for a while.

Gravatar I'm listening to our current President's press conference about the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac actions by his administration. Consent of the Governed has a post about it: http://yedies.blogspot.com/2008/ ...government.html

While also remembering his recent happiness with the FISA Act passage, I am dismayed that presidents now have so much control and power even as lame ducks. Their power is hardly lame and will have lasting and potentially detrimental effects. What a complicated and twisted web our government has woven.
When approval ratings hit the low 20's, there usually seems to be dissastisfaction all around with a little dirty business involved. (Our current IL governor has the same sort of ratings, particularly after the Rezko conviction). President Bush is still working his agendas a half year from exiting.

I'm glad you haven't thrown your hands up and are still asking for integrity, Spunky. Let's keep doing some whacking away ourselves.

Gravatar Excellently said! I particularly liked the phrase: "A sly tyrant who uses the power of taxation to manipulate personal behavior, redistribute wealth, and deny personal freedom."

Once again, great job!

Blessings from Ohio...

Gravatar GM just announced major layoffs and restructuring today. Detroit was already hurting before this announcement, this will only make a very depressed area more depressed. (If that's possible.) I'm waiting for Bush to tell us that he's going to bail them out.
