I have to admit to a feeling of pity for this guy - if the initial reports are correct, he seems to have something like Aspergers, and to have been used, rather than being a true convert. Even the initial police statements seemed to contain a breath of sympathy for him.
The friend is a dimwit, there's no doubt...
