What?

The nigerian 419 scam - of which this is a variant - is really scary. According to the national criminal intelligence bods, at any given time 5 american businessmen are hanging around the lobbies of london hotels, waiting for their first meeting with the scammers. Never underestimate the ability of greed to overpower common sense.

It is really nasty though: people have been seriously hurt and in at least one case, killed.

Killed? Bloody hell. Got a link for that?

I have little sympathy for people who lose their own money this way, but it's truly tragic the way some people not only fall for it but do so with someone else's money. There was that company receptionist-cum-secretary who bankrupted the firm, wasn't there?

A link? Why, of course.

There has also been at least one murder perpetrated by a 419 victim, who shot a nigerian diplomat in the czech republic. Apparently he'd been repeatedly visiting the nigerian embassy in attempts to get his money back, and eventually lost patience with the embassy officials.

Nasty business.

I dunno, it sounds like a pretty good deal to me...

They're hardly going to be scamming anyone; one of them's just lost her husband and the other's dying.

Have some respect.

"Both his legs and arms were broken and he had been set alight - probably while he was still alive."

Fuck.

He didn't deserve what he got (no-one does), but ...

"The syndicate issued a statement on the internet in which they claimed that they had stolen about R150m from the South African government by submitting false claims for "contracts" and that they needed help from overseas to get the money out of the country."

He was willingly getting involved with a criminal gang in order to take a slice of their stolen money. I have less sympathy for him than I would had it been one of the usual "The fascist junta won't let me keep my money" or "Please help me claim the money my husband left me" versions.

Sorry; should have said this ages ago.

Are they not bored yet?

Actually, no, maybe I shouldn't have.

are they the same 5 businessmen?
