You could offer to take up the highland bagpipe instead. The notes of the chanter are A mixolydian against the A of the drones, so a majors 7ths are avoided.

I suspect if you throw away all the keyboards and stick to an ocarina you'll probably lose the major 7ths problem mate.
You'd look great with a bagpipe though.
I'm sure bagpipes are tuneable, aren't they? Are they stuck at 440Hz?
