What?

We took the megabus, which was cheap and comfortable-ish. It took a big 3 hours, though you would probably be slightly quicker driving, as we had 3 or 4 10 min stops.

Guess it's doable in 2 and half if you want it.

About 3 hours by car if you get a clearish run. Tis about 175miles.

Watch out for speed cameras around gleneagles and dundee.

Thanks, guys.

Speed cameras shouldn't be an issue, with four people inside and a rather hefty flightcase on the roof.

Three hours sounds fine. I was faxing out some quotes to clients this afternoon, and my employers have a big map of Britain above the fax machine, and I just looked at Aberdeen and Glasgow and thought "Fucking hell." Of course, distances always look huge on maps of Scotland because it's so barren: big empty stretches of nothing always look bigger. Once I calmed down and compared it with the distance to Birmingham (which I've done in a hurry before), I felt much better.

Aberdeen to Glasgow is one of the dullest journeys I've ever had to suffer in my life.

Remember and play 'I Spy' to kill the boredom...

On the way there, maybe, but on the way back, on unlit roads, at two in the morning?

There's no way it's as dull as the drive from the border down to Dublin.

Sorry Jo. I've been a passenger for both journeys, and Dundee to Aberdeen (and vice versa) beats the border to Dublin journey hands down. We've taken to going the official tourist route now, which adds hours to the journey, but at least you don't want to slit your wrists before you are halfway there.

It's making me yawn just thinking about it...

IIRC the problem with the cameras is that they're on bits of road where the limit is lower than you'd expect.

Particularly at night. I'd stock up on red bull and heavy metal CDs.

You'd stock up on Red Bull and heavy metal CDs for a tea party.

I shall report back on the dullness.

>> You'd stock up on Red Bull and heavy metal CDs for a tea party.

I genuinley did 'LOL' at that. In work and everything...

Three hours is a definite lower limit even assuming no traffic. This is an average of 60 mph, which means that you have to be cruising at comfortably over 80 when you can.

Don't underestimate the speed cameras: there are a ton on the A90 in Kincardineshire (round the Fettercairn turnings etc), some nasty ones further along between Forfar and Dundee and yet more along the Kingsway in Dundee itself.

Considering the size and power of the car and the weight of passengers and gear, I'm going to be obeying the limit at all times anyway, in the interests of safety and not breaking down.

So nearly four hours, then?

It rather depends upon where in Aberdeen you are starting from and where in Glasgow you are finishing [both are big cities], and the time of day you intend beginning your journey......

The length of this piece of string may well be indeterminable.

Google Maps say 3hrs 55mins:

The timing is important. I've done that drive lots of times and if you forget that at weekends especially a lot of people go away for the weekend or commute and stuff. I've done the vast majority of trips in under three hours but I've hit traffic at Cumbernauld which took over 2 hours to get through. Apparently there are *major* roadworks around the auchenkilns roundabout it Cumbernauld which is slow at the best of times. Allow yourself at least 4 hours. If you are quicker then that's a bonus.

Thanks for that. I should probably aim to avoid Cumbernauld altogether. As should everyone, forever.

I always thought it had a cool sounding name though. Kind of like some exotic vegetable.

Yes, a cumbernauld and parsnip pie sounds about right.
