Sorry to appear as thick as plank of mince, but could you explain what a plank of mince is? We don't appear to have those in California. Are they as thick as John Prescott, for example?



I was combining two expressions, both meaning stupid: "as thick as a plank" -- probably the second most common British simile for thickness after "as thick as two short planks" (which has led to "plank" becoming a synonym for "idiot" in recent years) -- and "as thick as mince" -- a Scottish expression.

Mr Prescott was unavailable for comment.
