Somewhat alarmingly, I can see the derivation of the 'menstrual flux' bit. I have a copy of Culpeper's Complete Herbal, a manual of folk medicine from the 16th century. Many plants are listed as being used to "bring down women's courses", ie, to promote menstruation; a string, or pair (or even triplet) of strings on a guitar, lute, or similar, is called a 'course'.
