Great article and agree with everything you said. My company waited 2 years (my fault) before we got serious about strategic planning. If I was to add #6 to your list I'd say to use planning software that makes it easy to update/change your company's strategic plan. I did some research and found some great strategic planning software at http://www.mystrategicplan.com that has made my company much more effective. These folks also have a library of articles that offer more insight into the strategic planning process.
