the apple store lists a firewire 800 port on the new macbook pro and 2 usb 2.0 ports.

you can also get a cable that will go 9 pin fw800 to 4pin firewire 400 (the kind on cameras) for as low as $12

no deal breakers today:

Connectivity

* Built-in AirPort Extreme (802.11n)4
* Built-in Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
* Built-in 10/100/100BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45 connector)
* Two USB 2.0 ports
* One FireWire 800 port
* One ExpressCard/34 slot

OIC macbook only has USB2.0, pro has firewire.

don't most cameras have USB2.0 on them? Not that I have used it, funny though I wouldn't consider the Macbook. Maybe you are in Pro territory then, huh?

Gravatar The whole point of a laptop is portability. The bigger the screen the less portable. The MacBook Pro has FW800 but is 15 inches vs 13" for the MacBook and 12" for the old Powerbook. Even 13" is too big for the way I use it in the field.

I would pay more for a smaller MacBook Pro. It used to be you did not have to go "pro" for Firewire. But, there is no FW800 or 400 on the "new" MacBook. IMHO that is a downgrade!

You cannot use the USB ports on the MiniDV cameras for editing MiniDV video tape. I have two such cameras.
