It's funny, I'm a liberal, and every one of those reasons is dead on accurate...for a LIBERAL to be an envrionmentalist. Or to put it another way - being an envrionmentalist/conservationalist is NEITHER liberal or conservative. It is simply the right thing to do. Not just for every right thinking patriotic American, it's the right thing to do for everyone on the planet.

The reason I posted this, is that we (Conservative Republicans) have been tarred as "anti-environment", and I felt that it would be good to show that there is an environmental movement in the Republican party, as well as the Democratic party. You said it best, "being an envrionmentalist/conservationalist is NEITHER liberal or conservative. It is simply the right thing to do".

Great post! It's all true as far as this Repub is concerned. I've been interested in conservation and Alternative energy almost as long as I've been supporting the Republican party -- 20+ years. The reasons listed reflect how Repubs like me see their core values.

Looks like I stumbled upon this article a little late....
I'm generally politically conservative and I'm tired of the politicization of conservation/environmentalism. I believe a strong economy and wise environmental policy are not mutually exclusive. I'm irritated by the vitriol and fear-mongering spewed forth by the likes of Gore for political purposes. He hijacked this important issue.
Good article.
