Steve, it seems you're moving away from the VeggieGen and into more 'power-friendly' methods of houshold power?
I think the combination of solar and wind for power generation along with methane production from waste for heating, etc. is the way to go.
You could even rig up a natural gas engine for electric power generation for large peak loads.

Being your own power producer is maintenance intensive. The PV and wind systems require much less baby sitting than a engine generator.
