Sadly, we had a similar situation with a family member's ashes being taken hostage by someone who would not allow a funeral Mass for her.
The sisters of the deceased (my mother and aunts)had a Mass said for the repose of her soul in their home parish - it helped them to feel that they had done right by their sister's soul.

I agree, Schindlers wrote a fine statement. I hope her mom especially is holding up ok. This was all too much for a mother to bear...
