Ah, yes, chowder. My grandparents church in S. Illinois (rural area between Newton & Olney) had a chowder festival every year. They planned and prepared for the chowder for months.

Yep. Our local volunteer fire dept has a chowder day every Labor Day weekend. Across the river in Indiana, they call a very similar soup "fricasse". I'd heard of neither one before moving here 21 years ago and have never tried to make it on my own. I do like it.

ABOUT 5 MILES WEST MAKE OVER 1200
GALLONS OF CHOWDER ON LABOR DAY
WEEKEND. THEY HAVE MANY KETTLES
AND ELECTRIC STIRRERS.
