Alan posted the same thing this morning. Up in my part of Canada, the minumum wage is $9.00/hr which, when you factor in the cost of living isn't very much. However, our provincial government decided that there should be a discount to employers for new workers. So, if you are new to the work force, minimum wage is now $6.00/hr until you work a minimum of 300 hours. So guess what the employers do?

I, too, keep hoping people will get angry. Of course, I've been hoping that since Reagan laid the seeds for this b.s. revolution of the rich and ultra-conservative in the 1980s. I'm not sure how it came up at the board meeting of the really tiny non-profit organization I work for but a group of educated, supposedly progressive people were shocked, stunned even to realize that working 40 hours/week in DC, which has a minimum wage of $6.15/hr ($1 higher than the Federal mandate) wasn't even $13,000/year *before taxes* You can't live on twice that in DC. Wage standards in this country are just nuts. Nuts I tell you!
