The diesel-powered ship was deployed to Yokosuka in 1998...

Mmmmm...please don't believe everything you read...before nuc power, we actually used steam made from water heated by copious amounts of F-76...like they did on the ..... kitty....

Gravatar Yeah, you know these AP guys...

Gravatar Yeah, the Hawk used boilers and steam turbines but it would have been really cool if these had been available in 1961.

Gravatar I remember her from when she was based in SD. I didn't know she was being decommissioned...

Gravatar Would it not be possible to overhaul the engines' systems to become nuclear -powered, or would that not be...feasible...or economically feasible?

It just seems like such a sad end for such a proud lady, and leaves a large gap in our naval defence.

Gravatar Deborah - that would be like spending money to put a brand new V-8 engine in a clapped-out Pinto that has seen it's last days.

Requirements for a nuke plant are different than for a conventional and require a redesign of the engineering spaces as a result.

No, Kitty Hawk is seeing her last days before being hauled off to Bremerton in a year or so to rust away before being sent to Davey Jones' as either a reef or as part of a sinkex...

Gravatar FYI, the Kennedy decom is at the mid-point. I'm a supervisor working on it, and sometime in late July, she'll be leaving Mayport for the last time...and under tow.

Gravatar As an Ensign I learned how to maintain station plane-guarding KITTY HAWK. 12 years later I made a WESTPAC/IO deployment with her as XO of a frigate.
