Way, way back in the day (1980 - 1983, to be exact) I was stationed at RAF Uxbridge in London. I bought a new 320i and took delivery in Munich in '82. I also took a huge ration of ...uh... stuff from a pair of majors who bought 944s (what is it about O-4s and Porsches?) for "just a few dollars more" than I paid for the BMW. I'm sure you can imagine.
I drove that Beemer for ten years and put well over 100K on the clock, only selling it when maintenance costs exceeded operating costs. After reading your story, SJS, I think I made the right decision!

Porsche's are some of the most sexy cars on the road, back then and today. BUT they also represent one of the worst service records in automotive history.
Buck, I'd take your BMW anyday, over just about anything, except my much beloved and shall-never-have 1967 GT 500 Shelby.

Back in 1989 I am disillusioned with the Porshe Dealership, as they did not know their product well enough to advise me of the differential problem when I reported it. I narrowly avoided a major accident. The Wrecker Mechanic said the differential was a design fault that cropped up more frequently, but the Porsche Dealership were unaware of it. I guess this was one of their worst service records in automotive history. A year ago, I traded my Porsche with Mazda... Just had some minors problem such Mazda windows regulator broke down, necessitating new replacements at $500.00 each offered by the Mazda dealer... Other than that it is perfectly fine..
