Reagan had the right idea how to handle these union goons. Do what RR did to PATCO!

This is the kind of crap that gives unions a bad name.
For the sake of the city, I hope this ends soon.

While my commute, and that of my wife, wasn't bad, lots of folks are plenty inconvenienced today. Millions have to figure out how to get to work - people whose jobs aren't forgiving for lateness. Nurses and doctors who have to get to their hospitals for their shifts.
Home health care workers whose hourly wages pale in comparison to the wages currently enjoyed by the transit workers.
And this hurts everyone, not just the MTA.

Toussaint is an idiot and in way over his head. What kind of negotiating did this local expect from a former maintenance guy, who, by the way, is loved by socialists? The $1 billion surplus he's crybagging about is bologna- the MTA gets billions in government subsidies annually. It isn't an operating surplus. Lastly, the parent unions, both american and international, do not sanction this stoppage. Local 100 is a rogue local and they are hardly reporting this. Meanwhile, they are gambling with the lives of the sick and elderly for the sake of an inept buffoon's ego.

I just wonder how long this union would stay out if the public treated them like union treat picket line crossers or other members who don't toe the union leadership line?

I don't grok the trackback thing, but the Conservababes are also posting on the strike eventhough they are from "New Fallujah" (Detroit).

take a wander over there. They did a little digging about Reagan and PATCO. Maybe Bloomberg ought to lay the PATCO Smackdown on the TWU.

Another site blogging the whole strike is The Gothamist. Lots of pictures, stories from commuters, and information. Worth checking out.

Damn strike. I had to walk all the way from my place on the UES to Morningside Heights (I work right next to Columbia).
Let's just say in the freezing cold weather it was not a pleasant walk to say the least.
Damn the TWU union and it's outrageous demands.
(were I paid like an MTA employee I'd stock up on some of the strike gear you're selling)

"Average Salary for a Subway/Bus operator - $62,000
Starting Salary for a NYPD Police officer - $25,100"
a. you're comparing average to starting
b. Your wrong. NYPD starts off ~ 10,000 higher:

brs04wsc:
The new starting salaries going forward were reduced under the most recent police contract. A similar deal was made with the fire department. Starting salaries were slashed, while the existing fire and police got decent raises.

It could be worse. It could be the holidays and one of the busiest tourism times of the year. Wait a second.

brs04wsc,
Even if you were right, $35K to $62K, you have got to have problems if the change make any appreciable difference. The TWU is grossly overpaid in comparison to the cops or FD.
The TWU must receive the PATCO Smackdown or forget about the Taylor laws.
