Actually, ear infection or not, bringing toddlers in public appears to be one of the less brilliant ideas we've had. I'm looking for some kind of place (zoo?) to send The Duckling until she turns 6 or so. Right now every excusion could easily be confused for a filming of Wild Kingdom.

My wife took two of the kids to Toys'r'us when one was sick and needing her total attention. The other one managed to escaped and she had to chase after him, while holding the sick one, and she was 6 months pregnant at the time.

I came home and the hardest thing I've ever done was not laugh when she tearfully described the scene to me. It got funny for her around 10 years later.
