Gravatar I wish there were text-based boarding announcements at airports, especially for things like gate changes. At the very least, airports should make sure their P.A. systems sound clear and the people making the announcements don't speak too fast. Text displays would be best.

Gravatar That I MISS my hearing impaired friend and I wish she still had time for her non-hearing impaired friends... *sigh*

Gravatar Hmmm, I guess it would depend on what type of personnel it is -- the person at the boarding gate? Or the person where you first check in and check your luggage? (It's been over 10 years since I've flown so I don't even know procedures anymore!)

I think I would like to see a sign at all 'stations' telling me to let them know I'm hearing impaired/deaf. Then at least they know who needs extra help as far as communicating goes.

Notepads would help to communicate with people that don't lip read.

Seriously, a flashing light or something would help at the gate, to let people know it's time to board. I'm not sure they could set something like that up -- even a big sign that people could see would help.

The usual -- speak at a normal, NOT FAST, pace, don't over-exaggerate your lip movements, etc. If the airport personnel know sign language, do not assume all deaf/HOH people know sign language too. (I'm deaf and don't know sign.)

Gravatar Yeah! What a great opportunity!

Gravatar This just happened to me recently at a service counter - the person started a sentence and half way through turned away from me so I missed the last part. When you have someone's attention, complete the communication or transaction before turning away from them. Even hearing people can miss what is being said if you turn around while you are talking. Maintain eye contact as much as possible and don't cover your mouth with your hand. Little things make a big difference.

Thank you Jennifer for being an advocate for better communication!

Gravatar Yes, definitely text display that announces everything that is typically announced on the public announcements. It's extremely frustrating when planes get delayed and you have to go up to the boarding gate to find out every time you hear a public announcement being made, what's worst anyone who can't hear a thing has it harder, not knowing what is happening.

Gravatar Ironically I was at a gate once that had text notification for boarding and I almost missed my flight because I was with my hearing boss and he never heard them call our flight to board. Apparently they didn't call it at all, they used the TV screen. Crazy!

Gravatar beautiful blog template - are you available to help w colors for my tree house?
